Promoting circularity with release liner recycling

14-09-2022

ORLEN OIL operating as a part of the Capital Group of Polski Koncern Naftowy ORLEN S.A. is responsible for comprehensive manufacturing and distribution of lubricants. ORLEN OIL’s product offer includes automotive oils (for cars and trucks), oils for agriculture, industrial oils and liquids (washer fluids, radiator fluids, break fluids) and car cosmetics. Now, thanks to the RafCycle™ by UPM Raflatac release liner recycling service, they are embracing the circular economy.

 TAKEAWAYS
1. The overarching goal of this project was to circulate materials made from natural resources and reduce the pressure on forests
2. The Reganta company tries to convince and encourage their customers to make significant changes in the choice of materials in order to reduce their impact on the climate.
3. The label release liner waste collected will be used to produce new label materials supporting a circular economy. Otherwise, the release liner would be landfilled or incinerated.

Przemyslaw Niedzielski, Product Strategy Manager with ORLEN OIL recognized the need of circular solutions when he learned about UPM Raflatac’s RafCycle service.

“Obviously the overarching goal of this project was to circulate materials made from natural resources and reduce the pressure on forests, as wood is the main raw material used to produce label liners used in our products. By recycling our liner waste through RafCycle we can turn our liner waste into new paper products,” stated Przemyslaw Niedzielski.

Through the RafCycle Service, UPM Raflatac coordinates the pick-up of liner waste which is then recycled, reducing the impact to the environment compared to other waste disposal methods, such as incineration.

“The cooperation with UPM Raflatac on this project was very smooth. The main benefits are the possibility of recycling our liner waste and reducing the costs of their disposal,” said Niedzielski.

“The implementation of the RafCycle program with ORLEN OIL was a pure pleasure. From the very beginning, ORLEN OIL understood the benefits that our label release liner waste recycling service brings – so the whole process of implementation went very fast and professional. ORLEN OIL has very clear oriented sustainability goals and RafCycle complements them perfectly,” said Izabela Antczak, Packaging Solutions Manager, UPM Raflatac Poland.

ORLEN OIL is a customer of the Reganta company, an expert and technology leader in printing. Reganta is actively promoting the concept of renewable products in close collaboration with UPM Raflatac.

“Today, sustainable solutions are a must. We try to convince and encourage our customers to make significant changes in the choice of materials in order to reduce their impact on the climate” - says Igor Szlaski, Owner and CEO of Reganta. “I am very glad that our long-term client - ORLEN OIL, has decided to take circular actions. Since the beginning, our cooperation has been based on great business trust. `

Since joining RafCycle, the company has recycled a total amount of liner waste that equals to 111 trees left for other uses. Emissions were avoided in the amount of 2 tonnes of fossil CO2e compared to the same waste ending up incinerated. To put that in perspective, it means a car driving 13 549 km.**

Szlaski says Reganta always offers the most advanced label solutions, bearing in mind the specificity of the industry and ecological trends. “The fact that the label release liner waste can be recycled enables circular economy and has a positive impact on the climate. This is a huge step towards conscious care for the environment,” Szlaski adds.
